What’s the median income of families who live in your school district?

What percent of schoolchildren go to private school?

What’s the racial makeup of district residents? What percent of households have children under 18?

How does that compare to other districts in your county?

The U.S. Census Bureau offers a demographic profile of every Michigan school district, based on the five-year rolling average from its American Community Survey.

Michigan school district data tells us something about students — for instance, their race and whether they qualify for subsidized lunch — but for more specific demographics, we need to turn to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Below is a online database that allows you to see the demographics of any of 516 Michigan’s K-12 school districts, based on Census data from 2011 to 2015. It includes estimates on:

  • Number of people living in the district and the number of children enrolled in school, public and private;
  • Median family income;
  • Percent of families with children who live below the poverty line;
  • Percent of families headed by a non-Hispanic white;
  • Percent of families headed by a four-year college graduate;
  • Percent of householders with children under 18;
  • Percent of children in private school.

You’ll need to click on details to see all the complete information.

You can look up districts by county or by name of the district.

Caveats about the data: The estimates are based on the average of surveys administered between 2011 and 2015, and the margin of error increases for smaller districts.

Also, these estimates are based on everybody who lives in the district vs. just the families who use the public school system.
